Salvia Divinorum Extracts

Sunday, 15 March, 2009

Because Salvia divinorum’s effects are not as potent when either swallowed or chewed, methods were invented to increase its effectiveness and hence heighten its desired effects on users in consequence. The tactics employed usually entails the use of extracts to augment the amount of Salvinorin A in the Salvia leaves.  Salvia divinorum extracts are usually combined with the leaves to form a Salvia product called “fortified leaf”. Otherwise called “extract enhanced leaf”. It has the ability to produce the desired hallucinogenic effects of Salvia without having to ingest big amounts of smoke or large quantities of quid.

Fortified leaves should be taken sparingly and exact amounts of ingested material should be known to avoid accidental overdose. It is very important to know the amount of salvinorin A per gram of fortified leaf that you purchase for safety measure. Because fortified leaves have more Salvinorin A substance than normal Salvia leaves, it eliminates the need to withstand long minutes of quid chewing or pipe smoking. This makes it perfect for those who find themselves with high threshold for Salvia sensitivity. The recommended fortified leaf products are those which contain only fifteen mg of Salvinorin A for each gram of Salvia leaf.

There are currently two kinds of fortified leaf products, both of which pervade the Salvia market today. One is the crude extract enhanced leaf. Salvia leaves are extracted until a tar-like substance is achieved. The substance is the concentrated components of the Salvia leaves including salvinorin A which provides the plant its effects. It is mixed with new Salvia leaves to produce more potent products. Crude extract goods are usually tagged with a number and an “x” (10x, for example). This indicates the efficacy of the leaves in comparison with normal or ordinary Salvia. The number indicated how many leaves were used for one product of crude extract leaf. 10x means one leaf is added with the tar-like extract from nine leaves. This method, however, creates varying end products because the potency of one leaf can never be the same as that of another. Nevertheless, it does the job despite the fact that it burns poorly because of the sticky tar-like component.

The second type of fortified leaf is the Standardized salvinorin A enhanced leaf. This product is created by adding isolated salvinorin A into new Salvia leaves. The added salvinorin A is of a consistent quantity to ensure uniformity of product potency. As expected, preparation of this product consumes more time because of its complexity. Standardized enhanced leaf products are easy to burn unlike the crude extract products and are also finer in quality. Despite this, both types of enhanced leaves could serve your needs. You might develop a preference sometime later but it is always better when you can switch between varieties.
